Canon EOS Utility—Automatic Camera Clock Synchronization

Daylight savings time comes or goes, I travel to a different time zone, clock-drift occurs—all reasons why my Canon EOS camera’s date and time might be incorrect.

Today, I was thinking about how nice it would be for Canon’s EOS Utility to have an auto-clock synchronization feature. Each time I’d plug my camera into my computer, this feature would automatically synchronize the camera’s clock with the current date and time from the computer.

Guess what? Canon’s EOS Utility already has this feature! It’s disabled by default but is easy to turn on. Here’s how:

  • Connect your camera to the computer.
  • Launch EOS Utility.
  • Choose Camera settings/Remote shooting from the Control Camera tab.
  • On the three button toolbar that appears mid-way down the left side of the window, choose the tool button (the center button). This displays the Set-up menu below the toolbar.
  • Click on Date/Time.
  • On the dialog that appears, enable automatic clock synchronization.

Now each time your Canon camera connects with EOS Utility, the camera’s clock will automatically be adjusted if it doesn’t match your computer’s clock.

(Another option on the Date/Time Settings dialog is to have EOS Utility notify you of date/time discrepancies, asking if you want the clock to be synchronized instead of doing so automatically.)

I keep my camera connected to EOS for days at a time therefore it doesn’t re-connect and synchronize. Any way to have it automatically sync regularly so it keeps time accurately?

Good question, Dave! I think Canon would be the best one to answer it though there’s a chance that you might be able to find a third-party utility which does what you want.
